Placement to Progression: A student's perspective
Recognising that many students are seeking work-based opportunities, we took the opportunity to speak with one of our current student employees to gather valuable insights. Finn Thomson, a third-year student at the University of Chester, has worked in various roles across our business and was eager to share his experiences and offer advice for fellow students.
How did your career path at Chester Race Company start?
"My path to Chester Race Company wasn’t planned. As part of my course at the University of Chester, I was required to complete a 5-week work-based learning placement. However, my original placement provider withdrew just before the deadline. This unexpected turn of events ended up being a great opportunity, allowing me to join the Health and Safety team, which eventually led to working closely with both the HR and Staffing teams"
What made you want to continue working with us on a Race day?
"During my 5-week placement, I had the chance to work at the Boodles May Festival. Those three days gave me an invaluable insight into the logistics and excitement of a race day. Given the variety of opportunities available within the company, I decided to stay on for the 2024 racing season, taking on roles as an Admissions Team Leader and supporting the staffing team with employee check-in and check-out. The experiences I've gained throughout the racing season have been highly rewarding and worthwhile, and have played a key role in supporting my studies as I head into my third year at university"
Where did your journey go from here?
"After spending the summer working and travelling back and forth from Scotland for race days, the season came to a close. I returned to university and only worked occasionally due to my academic schedule, despite offering my interest in any opportunities that may arise. From this I was contacted by the HR team and offered the chance to work within the team supporting recruitment for one day a week. I’m really enjoying my time back in the office and am excited to see where this opportunity will take me in the future"
What has been your favourite part about your experience here?
"I would say that my favourite part of my experience at Chester Race Company has been the people. From day one to current, I’ve felt extremely welcomed and truly part of the team. The knowledge and confidence I’ve gained from working alongside experienced professionals will forever contribute to my continuous development"
Any advice for students?
"Don't be afraid to reach out for opportunities, you never know what may come out of it!"
